Oscar De La Renta: Five Decades Of Style

On Sunday I made a visit to my alma mater, SMU, to see the Oscar De La Renta: Five Decades of Style exhibit at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum. This exhibit is a retrospective of Mr. De La Renta’s career from the 1960s to today. Over 60 of his designs are featured in themes throughout the exhibit and he is specifically celebrated for his contribution to America by designing for First Ladies, including Nancy Reagan, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Laura Bush. Oscar is a true fashion icon and someone who exemplifies American style. How can any girl not fall in love with his classic and feminine creations? I was in pure fashion heaven throughout my walk through the exhibit and wanted to share with you my experience. Enjoy his stunning looks below and I hope you can visit the exhibit between now and October 5th so your fashion dream can come true too!

Lobbing Into Summer

Lobbing Into Summer

Lobbing Into Summer

Pippa Middleton debuted a new hairstyle on May 8th at London’s Waitrose Summer Party: the lob.  After seeing her new ‘do, it got me thinking about what I want my hair to look like for the Summer. I have very curly hair and hate to do my hair myself (Mattson and my friends can attest to my blow-dry addiction) so I need to have a hairstyle that will be easy for me to maintain and also that will keep me cool during the hot Dallas summer. For 15 years I had my hair in a short bob and then after I graduated from college I decided to grow it out. I had it long for 2 years and then cut it into a bob again last September. It has grown out again to a little bit below my collarbone and I am ready to trim it up for Summer.

Lobbing Into Summer

Pippa (and celebrities from Gwenyth Paltrow to Olivia Palermo) have inspired me to do the lob. The lob is a longer version of the bob and has a length that falls between the chin and the collarbone. It has been having a moment this year and I think it so chic! Its a fun look that seems to be low-maintenance, versatile, and cool for the hot, lazy Summer days ahead (not to mention my hair will be healthy after receiving a good trim). Best part about the lob? It looks great on any face shape so I know that it will complement my round face well. What hairstyle are you going to do for Summer?

Resort Fling By Essie / Nantucket Gold Jack Rogers

The warm weather has arrived in Dallas and that means I am constantly on the go in sandals and wedges with my pedicure always being shown off.  I love fun colors on my toes and think bright nail polish colors look great against my tan feet. The Easter Bunny delivered my new favorite toe polish color for Summer: Resort Fling by Essie.  It is a peachy coral and adds that fun pop  against all of my summer sandals (especially with my new fire coral/gold Nantucket Gold Jack Rogers). Can’t wait for my toes to have their fling with Essie this Summer!

Now that I have started working on my tan, it is time for me to adjust my make-up accordingly and my first order of business is a new bronzer. Bronzers are a perfect and easy addition to your Spring/Summer make-up routine (you get the tan look without actual sun exposure).  When deciding on a bronzer to get, make sure to use one that compliments your skin tone and is not too dark.  It needs to match your neck and chest so choose to according to your Summer skin tone. Apply bronzer to the face with a big fluffy brush and dust areas where the sun naturally hits the face: cheeks, nose bridge, upper forehead, chin.  Most important: dust the JAW LINE. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen women with the bronzer demarcation line on their jawline and how obvious it is that they did not blend it in. I have fallen victim to this myself and I have been totally embarrassed when a girl told me how my makeup didn’t match my skin tone. Lesson learned!
Bronzer lines that I suggest are Benefit (especially Hoola as it is matte with no shimmer), the NARS line (I love Laguna as its brown with golden shimmer), the Make Up For Ever Professional Mat Bronze line, and any bronzer by Bobbi Brown (the shimmer brick compact has been a part of my make-up repertoire for years). My new favorite is Soleil Tan De Chanel in Sunkissed. It is a pink, golden bronze color in a sheer illuminating fluid that has been my go-to this Spring.
Another great option is the light bronzer/highlighter combo as it is very pretty on the skin.  To apply, use a foundation brush or fingers to highlight the same areas where the sun would hit the face.  If you don’t want to use bronzer all over your face, you can add a drop to your tinted moisturizer or foundation to give your face an all over warm glow.  Head to your local Nordstrom or Sephora to pick up the perfect bronzer for your Spring make-up case!

Happy Friday! I am very excited to bring you my first feature and interview on the blog today.  Meet Lucy Akin, the founder and creator of Shop Super Street. Lucy hails from the San Francisco Bay Area like I do and we met our freshman year at SMU in Dallas. We clicked instantly and bonded over our birthdays (I am 9/11 and she is 9/12), our love for San Francisco, fashion, and France. The summer of 2007 we both found ourselves studying abroad with the SMU South-Of-France program in Cannes (seen on the right). One day on the trip, we decided to do a spur of the moment jaunt to Monaco. What was supposed to be a day of seeing the sights and enjoying the small principality turned into a major shopping spree for us. Lucy helped me pick out my first Chanel bag and I in turn told her she couldn’t leave without her first Prada. Ahhh I just love the college memories, especially the ones involving friends, fashion, and fun! As the years went on, Lucy’s passion for fashion continued to evolve and I always loved hearing about her cool internships in Dallas and in California  After we graduated she made her way back to California where she became a buyer for Satine in Los Angeles.

Shop Super Street

Recently, Lucy launched Shop Super Street, a new online shop that carries exclusive streetwear accessories and ready-to-wear pieces from leading fashion collections. If you live in Los Angles you are in luck because Shop Super Street offers day-of hand delivery service (order your items by 12 noon and receive them by 6pm) as well as on-site pickup. Shop Super Street has been added to my “Favorites” on my browser and I am currently lusting after these sunnies, this blouse, and this clutch. Read more about this fabulous new site on Women’s Wear Daily here and make sure to head on over to Shop Super Street NOW to purchase your favorite street essentials. Also, make sure to follow Shop Super Street on Instagram for all the latest updates. I had the opportunity to ask Lucy about her new gig, her fashion must-haves, and her favorites. Check out the interview below as you don’t want to miss anything from this fashion maven!

Shop Super Street

Tell me about yourself and how Shop Super Street came to be.

Super Street originally popped into my head as a gifting website. My friends at the talent agencies here in LA would call me for gifts for their celebrity clients and they would need it that day. The demand was so high that I thought it would be a great idea to have a website that they could browse and have day of delivery options from. Each item would have to be special and have that LA life in it. Of course, I couldn’t shy away from fashion so I dreamed up a site where people in the gift market could shop as well as girls looking for cool items.

The best part about creating Shop Super Street is…

I looooove curating a mix of product. That has always been my favorite part of the job (even when I was a buyer at Satine). I think it’s so important to work with the designer that you are buying from and help them translate their vision into wherever it may go – whether it be on-screen or in a store. Nothing makes me happier than bouncing from showroom to showroom discovering new things that I can bring to people!

What is the best advice you can give to those starting out in fashion?

I would say, be ready to work. I feel like I never graduated from doing intern work. It’s just apart of the job in fashion and there’s a lot of grunt work that happens behind the scenes to make it look so glamorous. I’m a true Virgo and I have the problem of things never being as good as you want them to be, unless you do it yourself.

Who and/or what is your style inspiration?

Shop Super Street

My style inspiration is a bit mixed. I definitely pull inspiration from the French New Wave girls (Brigitte Bardot, Anna Karina, etc.) For modern-day, I really admire the style of Ece Sukan. She’s a contributing editor for Style.com and she has a great handle on mixing menswear with luxury accessories of her own. She wore a vintage Alaia jacket at fashion week that had me drooling (seen on the right). And of course, Kate Moss – forever and always.

What item in your closet is your favorite?

My favorite item in my closet has to be a Valentino dress I got while working at Satine. It’s blue and white (my favorite colors), off the shoulder, and makes me feel like a movie star when I wear it.

*Check out Lucy below rocking her Valentino at Paris Fashion Week!

What is your favorite fashionable city?

My favorite fashionable city is Paris! I am fortunate to go very often for buying and I’ve become very comfortable being there. Paris is just so much fun – you feel like the city is yours when you can bounce around on your own all day and discover all the beauties it has to offer. Not to mention the constant fashion inspiration of all the very well dressed Parisians.

The must have item for Spring is…
FLATS! No one is in a heel this Spring. Everything is being paired with a sneaker, Birkenstock, or chunky flat sandal. Our feet will thank us when we’re older!
Any designers to watch?
Designers I’m watching would be Palace Skateboards. They are a skateboard company from London and I really admire what they’re doing (below left). It’s a very high-fashion, minimal approach to street wear. Another designer I adore that I think is going to hit it big would be Benedetta Bruzziches. Her bags have so much personality and life to them (below right). She’s like the Charlotte Olympia of handbags.

Favorite fashion moment is…

Phoebe Philo. Chloe. Spring 2004. That collection (above left) changed my life. That was my first encounter with Philo’s work (now the fashion designer for Celine and seen above right) and although I was in high school and couldn’t afford anything from the collection, I printed out thumbnails of all of the dresses from the runway and hung them up on my mood board in my closet. To this day, I search high and low on Ebay for one of those dresses. Her work is timeless and I’ve always connected with it.

Favorite quote…                                                                                                                                                   “Everything is wrong with me except the way I dress” – Baron Von Fancy

I don’t know about you, but I just love using emojis on my iPhone. They have become an integral part of social media communication and I think it is fun to send little happy faces or symbols for holidays, travel, and food. However, there are quite a few emojis that are missing from my emoticon keyboard and it drives me crazy. How many times can I put the red flamenco dancing girl to represent fashion? Don’t get me started on all the clothing emojis (totally out of style….I could go on for awhile about this if you couldn’t tell already). Well, Harper’s BAZAAR has solved my fashion emoji emergency! During my travels last week, I was reading Harper’s BAZAAR and stumbled across an advertisement for the Harper’s BAZAAR Emoji app available for free on the iTunes store now.  After doing some research, I discovered that the app was launched in early February just in time for New York Fashion Week. The famous magazine partnered with SixAgency to create the app and the London-based agency Crush Creative designed the fashionable emojis.  The app is presented by the iconic brand Equipment and features 36 chic emojis for you to send out to your contacts (4 of the emojis were created by Equipment). The emojis include French macaroons, the Valentino Rockstud pump, Karl Lagerfeld, SoulCycle bike, champagne bottle, the Olsen Twins, and a BAZAAR shopping bag to name a few. Just a quick tech fact: the app does not integrate with your keyboard so you have to open the app itself every time to send the emojis. Download the free app now so you can show your love of fashion one emoji at a time. Be on the lookout for new chic emojis to be released just in time for the next New York Fashion Week in September!
